With my 26th birthday came a lot of reflection. I think I've learned more in the last 26 months than I have in all of the previous years combined. Here's 26 pieces of wisdom that I wish I would have picked up much sooner in life:
1. What truly matters
We think it's about the achievements, money, or results. In actuality, it's all about who we become in the process and the impact we have on others.
2. Everyone is struggling
The more I learn, the more I find how broken we all are.
3. Advocacy vs. accountability
I believe that the world needs more encouragers and less critics.
4. Accountability, continued
In leadership and coaching, I actually don't believe in holding people accountable. Instead, I think it's vital to pave the way and then call others up to the level you're at.
5. Talent is overrated
Behind every "overnight" success, you'll find 10+ years of dirty hard work.
6. Embrace the suck
The rough side of the mountain prepares you for extraordinary destinations
7. Serving and giving
Life is all about serving others. Please volunteer.
8. Serving and giving, continued
It's easy to get discouraged with what you see on the news. It's paramount to focus on being the change you want to see in the world.
9. Consistency is the sexiest thing in the world
I'm convinced consistency - compound interest - is the 8th wonder of the world.
10. The truth about ultraperformers
Contrary to popular belief, the best DO fall down. They just get back on track quicker than everyone else.
11. Future teller
Your beliefs drive your actions. Your actions drive your habits. Your habits decide your future. Don't like where you're going? Start with your beliefs.
It is possible to rewire your brain. It takes time. I've seen it done.
13. You'll never be ready.
You'll never be more than about 80% certain. Do it anyway.
14. The world is changing at a rapid pace
Technology has made this world much smaller. It's spinning, quickly.
15. Choose yourself
Stop waiting for permission from someone else.
16. You and all of your friends
Show me your friends and I'll show you your future.
17. Friends, continued
With technology, it's easier than ever to have complete control over who is in your inner circle. Spend time with people who don't look like you.
18. You are dying.
May you live fully and die fulfilled.
Courage is not the absence of fear, but acting in spite of that fear. Stop trying to avoid fear and lean in.
20. Vulnerability is vital.
We cannot underestimate the unimportance of nearly everything.
Studies show that once you are above basic levels of need, 10K doesn't make that big of a difference. As someone who took a 10K paycut last year, I can vouch that your heart is much more important.
23. Let go of the finish line
"True motivation is not found within reaching a goal, but rather getting to a place where you can confidently and audaciously move the finish line far off into the distance once again." - Pencils of Promise
24. Everyone should see a therapist.
25. Controlling our thoughts
Many people believe you can control your thoughts. I don't necessarily agree. I think the first thoughts are usually outside of our control. What we should do is work to control the 2nd and 3rd thoughts that follow.
26. New eyes
Self discovery comes not from new landscapes, but in seeing things through new eyes.
